Swiss Rudimental Drumming Lessons and Workshops
Swiss rudimental drumming is a truly unique art form within the world of snare drumming. This style, specifically from Basel, combines extreme dynamic contrast with intricate flam rudiments and rolls. The development of precise, yet flexible, technique is required to execute compositions in a proficient and authentic way.
I have been studying Basel Drumming for many years and the effect it has had on my playing has been overwhelmingly positive. For this reason I am excited to share my knowledge and experience of this music and it's execution in workshops or one to one lessons.
Due to the technically challenging nature of this music it is advised that participant in the workshops and lessons have a firm grasp of basic rudimental playing and are comfortable with: Flam 5, 7 and 9 stroke rolls; Inverted flam-taps and flam accents; Pataflaflas and ruffs. (If you are someone who would like to learn this style of drumming but doesn't have much experience with rudimental playing have a look at the Tuition section of this website for the details of my standard one to one lessons.)
The topics covered in the workshops will include:
- Reading and understanding the unique notation - Basel drumming notation can be difficult to decipher to the untrained eye. Becoming comfortable with the notation is an important step.
- Rudiment breakdown - Taking the key rudiments which make up Basel drumming and looking into the style and technique for their proper execution.
- Repertoire - The aim for the end of the session is to play a composition as a group, in unison. This piece will be provided as a hand out as well as 2 other pieces of varying difficulty to be taken away.
- Drum Kit applications - My approach to applying this style of rudimental drumming to the drum kit.
